Emilie Clark; new paintings on view at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden

My Garden Pets, an exhibition of paintings by New York based artist Emilie Clark at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. This luscious body of work; watercolor, graphite and ink on paper, is inspired by the research Ms. Clarke did on the work of 19th century natural scientist Mary Treat, an expert on carnivorous plants. Clarkes work will be on view from Saturday March, 6th-May 31,2010

Below are some images of older work from Clarke’s show Maxwell’s Lair in 2009 at Morgan Lehman Gallery in NYC.

Clarke’s work supports her continuing interest and extensive study of women naturalists from the 19th century. Maxwell’s Lair, is a body of mixed media paintings culled from the life of 19th century naturalist Martha Maxwell. “Maxwell killed and prepared most of the animals in her collection and displayed them in naturalistic dioramas that she created.  Her dedication and devotion to her work parallels that of an artist.  Clark’s paintings are derived from stuffed-animal hybrid sculptures she constructs, in addition to close observation of actual specimens-living, taxidermied and pickled.”(1)

Emilie Clark, received her Master of Fine Arts at Bard College in 2001 and has a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Cornell University, Ithaca in 1991. Maxwell’s Lair is her second solo exhibition at Morgan Lehman Gallery.
