David Keel

Every time I visit the studio of Chicago based painter David Keel, his work seems to take me to mysterious, magical places that I have never been before. Suddenly I am there. I am in the painting, a voyeur, an interloper, a spy.

We here at Paper Crane have posted Keel’s work before and we continue to check in with him and follow him around like a kid brother or  newly adopted puppy. We are big fans.

Upon entering his studio, you are surrounded by paintings, paint tubes and brushes, an old pump organ (which Keel and his brother collect.) records, books, and his best friend, a dog named Mayfield. Keel can be found working in his studio most days and often late into the night. It is there, when visiting,  you can sit on an old, comfy couch, Keel might pop on an old Doc Watson record while you look all around and see the foggy, dream like pictures. Sometimes Keel can be found here sewing himself a new pair of pants or a nice collared shirt, or fixing someone’s door lock or light fixture. He is a man of many trades and skills. Below is a very small sampling of paintings by the incredible David Keel.
