I initiated this series with a nostalgic notion of vintage photographic portraits and it has evolved over the past year. Most of the pieces begin by sharing the common denominator of a sepia toned abstract form. Using a mix of synthetic materials such as Yupo paper, Sharpie pens and acrylic inks, I embrace and push the limitations of non-traditional painting materials. This process has become an exciting vehicle to express contrasting form, contemporary content and movement.”

As I work, each piece unfolds as a conversation that collides. Working only on paper I spar with the claims of painting versus drawing. The explosive and organic forms that I describe hold qualities of physical destruction yet are pinned to flat planes of unworldly colors and positions. The aggressive mark making and its placement teeter with delicate line work to create internal balances and tensions within the compositions. The process of making these works is as important as the resulting images. In an almost surgical exploration of abstract passages, I am then lead to create what appears to be a three dimensional presence.”

Using visual language in this manner I am able to address issues of war, commercialism and personal experience. It is my intention to present abstract work that creates a new experience and dialogue for the viewer. They may connect with some of the intended signs or metaphors that are buried in my compositions. But, they will undoubtedly bring their own experiences, notions and absurdities. This may lead to new conversations that can evolve and collide as well.”
